International School of Debrecen

Debrecen, Hungary

The architectural concept of the International School of Debrecen is centred around the symbolic form of a circle. This simple yet profound shape represents protection, unity, and community while seamlessly blending into the neighbouring Natura 2000-protected Nagyerdő forest.

Education and Culture

The school is located in the Pallag area of Debrecen, easily accessible from the city centre yet surrounded by a unique natural environment that provides an ideal setting for education based on the joy of discovery. The design challenge was to create a modern building that harmonizes with its green surroundings while standing out as a distinctive, internationally recognized institution.

The circular form embodies the spontaneous gathering of people, a space free of division and hierarchy, symbolizing community and inclusivity.

The forest bordering the site serves as a direct connection to nature and the world around us, playing a fundamental role in the school’s identity. Our concept integrates the curved mass of the building with educational nature trails, together forming the complete circular shape – symbolizing the deep connection between humans and nature.

The classrooms are housed in pavilion-like structures connected by spacious communal areas.

The International School of Debrecen accommodates approximately 500 students across three age groups, each with distinct needs. Their dedicated spaces are arranged along the circular layout, interconnected yet separate. To enhance functionality, the school features two entrances: one for kindergarten and elementary students and another for high school students, which also serves as the main entrance. For the youngest children, we created a secure, self-contained environment within the school. Communal functions such as administration, the auditorium, the dining hall, and support services are positioned on the ground floor, while the upper floor is dedicated to focused, quiet learning.

The building’s structure embraces the outdoor community spaces and sports fields. From the classroom level, bridges lead to the elevated basketball court. The wide outdoor staircases, which lead to the shaded inner courtyard, can also serve as spaces for small-group learning. Throughout the building, playful learning corners, seating areas, and various communal spaces support education. The harmony between architecture and nature creates an inspiring environment where curiosity-driven learning strengthens students’ deep connection to the natural world.
