Apartment Building in the Hajdúság Region

Thanks to its renowned thermal waters, Hajdúszoboszló is one of the most popular rural holiday destinations. With continuous infrastructure development, it has become even more accessible from Debrecen. As tourism grows, more resorts and apartment buildings are being constructed in the area. Our studio was commissioned to design an apartment development with both residential and commercial functions on a site located in the immediate vicinity of the thermal baths.

The site previously served as a marketplace and a plant nursery. To preserve this heritage, we aimed to create a sense of a community garden, integrating structures that harmonize with the scale of the surrounding buildings. A key element of the design is the elevated platform above the sidewalk level, which not only provides privacy for the garden but also separates the street-level commercial spaces and traffic from the residential units above.

The apartments, terraces, communal gardens, and landscaped areas are arranged in a pixel-like pattern across the platform. The variously sized, semi-gabled volumes form a dense, garden-like composition. At the centre, a three-story building stands, while smaller single-story houses are appeared around it, either in groups or as freestanding structures. A network of pedestrian pathways weaves through the residences, green spaces, and gardens, fostering a lively, organic atmosphere. The overall design balances geometric order with natural randomness, creating a vibrant, park-like environment. Surrounded by public streets, the elevated garden emerges as a lush green island within the urban fabric.
