The 150 flat Bem Park apartment block complex is built along one of the main axes of Debrecen, a city in the East of Hungary, which connects its centre with the city park, Nagyerdő. Located between the downtown and an elegant, green villa area, the exciting and ecological project is an exemplary and fresh spot of the city with its characteristic architecture and exclusive inner 'valley'.
Architecturally, our basic intention was to place the individual houses on the slightly irregularly shaped site so that they create a natural and calming, yet powerful composition. The project contains 10 four-story buildings with a total of 150 residential units surrounding a green area with settled trees and vegetation. Regarding the area as a built landscape, the group of buildings enclose a central, inner garden, thus becoming its organic part with their large terraces. The vegetation of the inner garden can overlay the gradually emerging volumes that create hillsides around a light and sunny central space.
In the heart of the central area, this 'green valley' provides a calm, protected and private, however, inspiring environment, a real living space for the inhabitants.
While the units blend in perfectly with the landscape, the buildings appear as ordinary, ‘house-like’ masses from the street and the surrounding sites. From outside, the buildings have more closed facades: rational shapes and forms blend well with the existing street view, however, they create a sharp contrast with the softer aesthetics of the inner garden and the floating white layers of the buildings. The reception and the entrance areas are opened from this axis. Each building can be accessed individually by walking on a meandering pathway through the garden while the apartments are embraced by temporary terrace strips.
Ecological details and solutions ensure sustainability and easy maintenance.
During the design process, sensitive, environmentally friendly aspects were handled as high priority. It might serve as an exemplary project for such developments both architecturally and ecologically not only in Debrecen, but through the whole countryside. With its grandiose and attractive lines and shapes, the project is a fresh spot in the dynamically developing and ever-changing cityscape of Debrecen.
